Flip Flops in the Sand

This is sort of a crafty lesson. It will take  2- 45 minute classes to complete.
Last summer I made paper flip flops with scrap booking paper then I saw a post where the teacher/blog? ( not sure now where?)  made flip flop using pipe cleaners and beads for the straps.  Great Idea.  So I used that idea and then the class brainstormed how we could display the flip flops and we came up with the idea of them left on the sand as you walk into the water.
First we colored a whole piece of paper sandy colors with crayon colors of gold and brown mixed together. Then  I made a sample of tissue paper water, a little glue and salt on top of the water and stapled the flip flops on top of the paper.   The 4th graders finish them up next week.
The students wanted to go home and make bigger ones to fit their own feet. we had so much fun making these.  Beach boys music in the background.  Too Cute.  Is anyone else looking forward to summer??!!

Sun Faces

I demonstrated to the students how to create the big eyes, eyebrows, the shape of the nose and the smile. I emphasized using thick and thin line.
The sun face was inspired from several sources...Sun Valley Idaho used to have a sun face logo and the Terracotta sun faces from Mexico
The rays of the sun can be straight or curvy.
To show shadowing on the face as well as the rays -- we practiced using hatch marks. If you do hatch marks - try to do them all one side -- to add a sense of harmony and uniformity to your design. See earlier Post--  http://bluemoonpalette.blogspot.com/2010/06/sun-faces.html

Cruise Ship Art Drawing

First and Second graders began a Cruise ship drawing.  We discussed levels of the ship, deck, the bow, captains room, etc.. Several of the students have traveled on a cruise ships or a ferry. We discussed foreground and background.  we used a varioety of shapes and lines: rectangles, circles as well as wavy lines, straight, and curved lines.  Students wanted to name their ship.  I actually looked up some names of RC cruise ships. The  students seemed to get excited about this project.  Some drawing have a beach in front w/ a lighthouse and some just have the boat. The drawings here are teacher samples.

Paper Plate Sun Faces.

Ever have one of those weeks where there are a lot of interruptions, field trips, assembly spirit days etc... Well here is a quick fun lesson with Kinders when the schedule doesn't give you much time.
Paper plate sun faces.
We discussed how the days are now longer and we are going to see the sun more often now that spring is here and summer is coming!!
Simple easy fun. I precut the sun rays.
Color, design the face and glue. the school hall is full of sun faces.
Happy Sunny daze!!

Cinco de Mayo Sombreros

These were made by 2nd graders. Each student was given the yellow patterns and watched a demonstration of how to organize their design patterns.  pattern ideas handouts were on each art table for reference.  We played salsa music and had a grand day!  What a fun project!! Happy Cinco de Mayo!!!                          Note: I saw this project many places- painted paper, flickr, deep space sparkle.  So thanks to all those amazing art teachers who help give me new ideas to build my program.

Glass Tile Pendants= New Hobbie

I am making about 40 of these as teacher gifts for a principal friend of mine. I bought most of my supplies at Ben Frankin craft supply.  I thought another  idea would be to take your own art -and make them into small pendants.  take photes, download shrink and make pendants.
